VOLUNTEERING

 

The Rainbow Youth Centre has a variety of volunteer opportunities during the evenings and afternoons. Please read through the following information about upcoming opportunities. UPDATE: We are unfortunately not able to accept any volunteers from the community for the 2017 Fall programming period (September 1st, 2017 to December 31, 2017).  At this time all our volunteer opportunities have been filled with helping hands.  Please check back with us towards the end of the year for volunteer opportunities for the 2018 Winter programming period. EVENINGS

TuesdayREC NIGHT
Commitment: 6:15 pm – 9:00 pm
Being physically active is the primary goal of the program. Youth will be introduced to various physical literacy activities (running, climbing, jumping, catching) as well as fitness and recreational activities (including basketball, swimming, bowling). Volunteer role: to encourage youth participation and model cooperation, team work, and being active. Tuesday evening program is supported by City of Regina 2016 Community Investment Minor Grant, Sport & Recreation Stream.
WednesdayThe STRUGGLE is REAL
Commitment: 6:15 pm – 9:00 pm
Supporting youth through the joys and struggles of adolescence is the goal of the program. Using learning activities based on mental, physical, emotional and spiritual aspects youth will discover personal coping strategies to meet their needs. Volunteer role: encourage participation and validate efforts. Wednesday evening program is supported by a Community Initiatives Fund - 2016 Community Grant program.
WednesdayRANDOM ACTS
Commitment: 6:15 pm – 9:00 pm
The 4th Wednesday of the month will be dedicated to a project where youth have the opportunity to display kindness towards others through a random act. RANDOM ACTS is supported by a City of Regina 2016 Community Investment Major Grant, Social Development Stream.
ThursdayHELP with HOMEWORK
Commitment: 6:15 pm – 9:00 pm
Supporting youth in attaining educational/vocational goals is the goal of the program. The first half is helping youth complete school assignments. The second half is focused on building skills that youth will use in work situations. Volunteer role: to assist youth with completing individual school assignments and encourage learning. Thursday evening program is supported by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice - Community Justice Program.
FridayMOVIE NIGHTS
Commitment: 6:15 pm – 9:00 pm
A guaranteed night of fun night at Rainbow – movies on the big screen! Volunteer role: assist with handing out snacks, sharing laughter (or tears depending on movie), and helping with cleanup.

 

AFTERNOONS

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm
Commitment: one day a week.
Youth are able to come in during the afternoon and “hang out” at the Centre on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays from 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm. There are several non-structured activities for youth to be involved in. Volunteer role: interact with youth and encourage their participation in board games, card games, playing piano, ping pong, and creative arts such as drawing.
AFTER SCHOOL GYM ACTIVITIES 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm
Commitment: one day a week.
Youth are able to come in during the afternoon and use the gym area for sport on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays from 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm. Youth organize their own activities. Volunteer role: interact with youth and encourage participation in gym activities such as basketball, bump, badminton, skipping, pickle ball, and using the workout equipment.

 

IN ADDITION

BAKING
Volunteers work independently in the kitchen baking snack items of muffins and cookies which are distributed during program times. Commitment: weekdays, hours vary pending Centre activities.
MEAL PREPARATION
Volunteers work in the kitchen with Rainbow’s cook to prepare the evening supper meal. Supper is served at 4:45 pm. Commitment: weekdays, with hours varying between 12:30 pm and 6:00 pm.
SPECIAL PROJECTS
Rainbow Youth Centre sponsors a few Special Events throughout the year. Such events include: Dances, Youth Week, Annual Picnic, and Christmas. Volunteers work to support program aspects (such as setting up tables or preparing and serving food). Hours are variable and specific to the special event. The Volunteer Coordinator can explain specific details at time of interview.
OTHER VOLUNTEER IDEAS
In recognition of various talents and abilities, Rainbow Youth Centre encourages potential volunteers to share their interests with the Volunteer Coordinator as new opportunities for volunteer work may emerge from the discussion.
